Coconut Oil: The Miracle Oil

At first, talk of the “miracles of coconut oil” seemed like a health trend that would have its moment and then pass. The years have passed and the hype of coconut oil has continued to grow due to consumers having the opportunity to see the consistent miracles of coconut oil come true.

Many people have a common misconception that fats like coconut oil are unhealthy and play a role in heart disease. It is the exact opposite. Coconut oil is actually one of the healthiest oils you can consume, especially when cooking. Coconut oil has been referred to as a “heart-healthy” food and can keep your body functioning efficiently in several different ways.

You want to beware of the cooking oils containing soy, canola, sunflower, safflower, or corn as a base. Some people will try to convince you that these oils will benefit your health. The moment these oils are exposed to heat, their antioxidants instantly turn into harmful toxins. This is where coconut oil comes in.

Coconut oil is extracted from matured coconuts. The Coconut is actually incredibly nutritious. In fact, islanders have a diet centered around coconut because of it's numerous health benefits. The reason coconut oil is better to use when cooking, is because it does not have the capability to react with heat and create harmful toxins. The Coconut oil is able to hold onto its powerful antioxidants.

So what are the health miracles that Coconut oil is responsible for? Ingesting Coconut oil can help your body fight against viruses or bacteria that can cause illness, regulate hormones for thyroid and blood sugar control, reduce cholesterol, lose weight, delay aging damage, and moisturize skin and hair.

If you are using Coconut oil for non-cooking situations, you should only use organic cold-pressed virgin Coconut oil that is not processed. The more foods are processed, the less health value they offer. When Coconut oil is organic, it allows for a reduction in the absorption of toxins and pesticides through your skin.

Coconut oil is excellent as a skin moisturizer or lotion and can help improve the conditions of psoriasis, dermatitis, and eczema. This oil can be used as a great base for facial treatment or applied as a topical hair conditioning treatment.

So why choose Coconut oil over commercial moisturizers? These commercial moisturizers contain a lot of water which tricks you into thinking your skin is getting the moisture it needs. The moment the water is absorbed, your skin becomes dry again. Petroleum-based ingredients are found in many moisturizers and these are bad for your skin because they don’t allow your skin to breathe.

Coconut oil is not filled with water or petroleum-based ingredients allowing it to provide your skin with the deep, lasting moisture it needs. Coconut oil also helps strengthen underlying tissues and assists in the removal of dead cells on the surface of your skin which creates a dry, flaky texture.

However you choose to use Coconut oil, it is best consumed in moderate amounts, in its virgin or unprocessed form. The reason we want Coconut oil to be in an unrefined state, is because the bleaching and deodorizing processes that come with refined versions can be damaging to our liver.

If you would like some recommendations of which Coconut oils are the best, check out the following:

A Cup of Tea-A-Day Keeps the Doctor Away

Fighting off a cold or the flu can be a challenge and you have to act fast, especially when those around you are sick. A group of scientists who did a study at the University of Arizona found that when someone is sick in an office environment it only takes four hours for the surfaces, like coffee pot handles or door handles, to show traces of the infectious virus. There are ways to fight back against these viruses and preventative measures to consider.

You start to hear the phrase “I’m feeling under the weather,” a lot more once there is a significant drop in the temperature outside. The harsh months of winter are tough on your body and you must keep your immune system strong. Did you know that drinking tea can actually help in getting you through the winter season?

There are many different kinds of tea and each one has it's own, specific, health benefit. There have been many studies that show drinking tea can be beneficial for preventing colds and flu for several reasons. Tea is known for strengthening the immune system and has a powerful antiviral effect, as well as a strong antibacterial effect.

Green tea is the fuel your body needs to stimulate the immune system to work harder against fighting viral infections. This is made possible due to the unique antioxidant polyphenol called epigallocatechin, or EGCG, which green tea contains. The production of white blood cells, produced by the immune system to fight infection, are supported by these EGCG antioxidants.

EGCG antioxidants also encourage the amplified reproduction of the immune system’s B-cells. This is important because a single B-cell produces thousands of antibodies and each one automatically attacks specific germ invaders.

Another important component of tea, is the potent antiviral agents it contains. The catechins in green tea and the theaflavins in black tea reduce virus reproduction by inhibiting the attachment of the virus to your cells. If a virus is unsuccessful at taking over your cells, then your chances of keeping that nasty cold or flu away are looking good.

Studies also suggest that green tea and white tea are influential enemies of bad bacteria in your body. These studies suggest that the combination of EGCG and another polyphenol antioxidant called epigallocatechin, also called EGC, which is the same antioxidant found in pomegranate, are a forceful duo that can put a stop to the spread of bacteria in your body. There is also such a thing as “good bacteria,” like acidophilus which promotes healthy digestion, and drinking green tea can increase these levels.

Why wait until your body is under attack by a cold or flu virus? You can plan ahead and begin drinking immune building teas on a daily basis throughout the winter season. A recommended way to drink black or green tea is with lemon and honey. Breathing in the steam of hot tea like this can stimulate the cilia, or hair follicles in your nose, which serves as a natural germ cleanser. The lemon is great for thinning mucus and the honey is antibacterial and will also enhance your herbal experience.

To ensure you have stronger and better health in the future, you can consider replacing your cup of coffee in the morning with a cup of tea. This may be a difficult switch for some, and if this is the case, you could try a rotating schedule where you drink coffee one day and tea the next. If you can do this, you can rest assured that your immune system will be stronger!

The Grocer suggests the following:

1) The green tea used in Mai Green Tea is premier Matcha tea, which has been used in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. This tea is all natural and contains no sugar, artificial colors or flavors. Click Here to Read More About Mai Green Tea

2) Celestial Seasoning's Green Tea with Antioxidants will surely give your immune system the upper hand in fighting back against the cold and flu season. With added antioxidant Vitamins A, C, and E, plus a breezy citrus sweetness reminiscent of old-fashioned lemonade, this smooth blend of authentic green tea and delicate Bai Mu Dan white tea, one of the rarest and youngest of teas, is as healthful as it is delicious. 3) Try Numi's Organic Black Tea with Pu-Erh. Pu-Erh boasts a deep bold body that is smooth and earthy with hints of malt. This rich, energizing tea is deeply satisfying as a coffee alternative. The Power of Borage Oil

Most dry skin isn't too serious, but it definitely can make you feel self conscious or uncomfortable. Most dry skin is temporary and the symptoms commonly appear with a change in temperature and humidity. In temperate regions, your skin tends to be dry in the winter because the temperature and humidity levels decrease drastically. But if you live in a desert region, dry skin can occur in the summer, as well, because temperatures soar, but humidity levels remain low. Sun is known for drying out your skin because the sun's ultraviolet radiation breaks through the top layer of skin, which holds in moisture.

Other signs and symptoms of dry skin can depend on your age, your health, where you live, or time spent outdoors. For instance, if you're older than 40, live in a dry, cold, or low humidity climate, have a job that requires you to immerse your skin in water, like a nurse or hair dresser, or if you swim frequently in chlorinated pools, then you may be more susceptible to dry skin.

There are several symptoms of dry skin. If you have dry skin, your skin may feel a tightness after swimming, showering, or bathing. The appearance of your skin may look and feel rough, have severe flaking, scaling, or peeling, have fine lines or cracks, have some redness to it, or may appear gray or ashy in people with dark skin. One of the most common symptoms of dry skin is itchiness.

Fighting back against dry skin can be a challenge. Our skin, after all, is our first line of defense against outside elements. We are tempted to simply hide our skin and cover it up when sun, wind, or cold leave it feeling dry or itchy. Dry or itchy skin isn't something you should have to live with permanently, there is a solution. You can replenish your skin and provide it with the nourishment it needs to become smooth and sleek again.

I am sure you are familiar with the term "moisturize." Moisturizers are important to incorporate into your daily regimen because they provide a seal over your skin to keep water from escaping. This is why you want to apply moisturizers immediately after bathing.  You want to avoid completely wiping down after a shower and allow a little moisture to remain before you moisturize. It is recommended to apply moisturizers several times a day.

Even better, is to apply a moisturizer which contains oil. Oil allows the moisturizer to have more staying power and prevents the evaporation of water from the surface of your skin.

Many people have dry skin that will not go away and cannot be relieved with traditional moisturizers. There is a line of moisturizers called "Borage Dry Skin Therapy" which is not your traditional moisturizer because it contains an ingredient called Borage oil. Borage oil relieves dry, cracked, or itchy skin in just days, and promotes the growth of healthy, new skin cells for long-term benefits.

Borage oil is found in the seeds of the Borage plant, also referred to as the "Starflower." It is a natural source of Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA), which is an important OMEGA-6 fatty acid required for healthy skin cell membranes. Without sufficient GLA, your skin cells cannot retain enough moisture. This can result in dry skin! Borage oil enters your skin and delivers GLA and its' benefits directly to the cells. Because of this, your skin is able to retain more moisture and look healthier.

"Borage Dry Skin Therapy" lotion is a line that will supply your skin cells with GLA and, when used regularly, will provide both immediate relief and long-term improvement to your dry skin.

Vitamin C: Give Your Cold a Fighting Chance

Many people suffer through colds on a regular basis. These nasty cold viruses tend to take advantage of us during the winter months when we're in close quarters with others who have been infected. All it takes is just one sneeze...

You can prepare your immune system for this coming brutal cold season, though. Remember what your mom used to say when you were sick? "If you know what's good for you, you'll take your Vitamin C!" Mom does know best.

Vitamin C is an important vitamin and antioxidant that your body uses to maintain your strength and health. Vitamin C is also used in the maintenance of bones, muscles, and blood vessels. It assists in the formation of collagen and helps the body absorb iron. Not to mention, it is one of the safest and most effective nutrients.

"Vitamin C has received a great deal of attention, and with good reason. Higher blood levels of Vitamin C may be the ideal nutrition marker for overall health," says study researcher Mark Moyad, MD, MPH, of the University of Michigan. "The more we study Vitamin C, the better our understanding of how diverse it is in protecting our health from cardiovascular, cancer, stroke, eye health, and immunity to live longer."

Our bodies do not naturally produce or store Vitamin C, so it's very important to incorporate it into our daily diet. Where is Vitamin C found? It is produced naturally in fruits and vegetables, most commonly in oranges or other citrus fruits. It is common to see Vitamin C available as natural dietary supplements in the form of powders, pills, or chewable tablets.

We would have to eat a lot of fruits and veggies in order to ingest the proper amount of Vitamin C that our body needs on a daily basis. This is where dietary supplements come in. Supplements can provide us with the right amount of Vitamin C so that we can reap the health benefits without having a high produce bill. Research has shown that the best way to ingest the proper amount of Vitamin C is to take 500 milligrams a day in addition to eating 5 servings of fruits and veggies.

Many Vitamin C supplements have more than 500 milligrams because it is not always practical for most people to consume the required servings of fruits and veggies needed on a daily basis. It is said that only 10% to 20% of adults get the recommended nine servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Taking a supplement once a day is safe, effective, and easy.

The Grocer recommends "Emergen-C Vitamin C." The powerful blend of Vitamin C, 24 nutrients, 7 B vitamins, antioxidants and electrolytes boosts your immunity, increases your metabolic function and ignites your energy level to help you feel strong. Super orange tastes delicious but it also comes in a variety of other flavors, too! Why wait? Choose to protect your health and avoid that nasty cold! Click Here To Fight The Cold!

Vitamin-D: "The Sunshine Vitamin"

In the dead of winter, it is difficult to find the desire to spend time outside. Even if you’d like to get out, sometimes the extreme chill in the air or poor road conditions, prevent you from it.

This poses as a bit of a problem. Our bodies are meant to have consistent exposure to sunlight. This is where we get our vitamin-D. Vitamin-D is also known as the sunshine vitamin, because when we're exposed to the sun, our bodies produce it in the skin. The more skin you expose the more vitamin-D is produced.

Approximately 80% to 90% of vitamin-D that the body gets is gained through exposure to sunlight. The lack of sunlight in the winter months may increase a persons risk for vitamin-D deficiency. According to the Vitamin-D Council, over 90% of the population is deficient in vitamin-D.

It is recommended to spend time soaking up the sun two to three times a week in order to produce enough vitamin-D. In the winter, this is typically not feasible because of the time spent indoors. Age and skin type effect the amount of sunlight that a person needs in order to receive the appropriate level of vitamin-D. Season and time of the day present a challenge because they effect the actual levels of vitamin-D that a person receives.

Being cooped up in the winter months limits vitamin-D intake because of lack of sunlight, but believe it or not, vitamin-D deficiency also occurs in sunny environments. In hot climates, people are staying indoors more, covering up when outside or using sunscreens to reduce the risk of skin cancer.

It is clear that our bodies need the right amount of vitamin-D, but why? What exactly does vitamin-D do for us? Vitamin-D plays many valuable roles in our bodies, including maintaining strong bones through keeping calcium in the bloodstream longer and supporting immune health. Every tissue in the body, including the brain, heart, muscles and immune system, has receptors for vitamin-D, which help each of those tissues function properly.

Aside from lack of exposure to sunlight, you may also experience a vitamin-D deficiency from your daily diet or certain medical conditions. Most of the natural sources of vitamin-D are animal based, including fish, egg yolks, cheese, beef, etc. Most people, especially vegetarians on a strict diet, do not maintain an appropriate level of vitamin-D from the foods they consume.

It is common for elderly, over the age of 65 years old, to be at risk for vitamin-D deficiency. Most elderly do not spend as much time in the sun and their skin finds it harder to convert sunlight into vitamin-D. Their kidneys are aging and it typically becomes more of a challenge to convert dietary vitamin-D to a useful form. Here is a surprising statistic: As many as 40% of older people even in sunny climates such as South Florida don’t have enough vitamin-D in their systems.

How can you avoid being vitamin-D deficient? You can take vitamin-D supplements. If you are not getting the right amount of sun exposure or are worried of about exposing your skin to too much sunlight, this is a great way to get vitamin-D. Vitamin- D3 is the best kind of supplement to take. It comes in a number of different forms, such as tablets and capsules, but it doesn’t matter what form you take, or what time of the day you take it.

You will hear different organizations recommending different amounts of vitamin-D supplements to take daily. The Vitamin-D Council recommends taking larger amounts of vitamin-D each day because smaller amounts aren’t enough to give you what your body needs. The Vitamin-D Council recommends that adults take up to 5000IU per day. Click Here to Read More About Healthy Origins D3 5000IU

Most people can take vitamin-D supplements with no problems. However, if you have certain health problems or take certain medicines, you may need to take extra care.

A lot of us may have been feeling the effects of not having enough vitamin-D in our system, but not have known that this is why we’ve felt tired or run down. Try incorporating vitamin-D supplements into your life, and you are bound to feel better and have more energy!

9) JARROW FORMULA’S UNIQUINOL QH ABSORB: Ubiquinol is the reduced (active antioxidant) state of Co-Q10. This is the form produced by our cells and is significantly better absorbed as a supplement, particularly as we age. Jarrow Formulas® QH-absorb® is a proprietary enhanced stability formula, which has been clinically shown in humans to increase Co-Q10 levels up to 777% (6.14x) over baseline at 300 mg per day intake. It is suggested to take 1 to 3 softgels a day with a meal or as directed by your qualified healthcare professional. Click Here To Check Out Jarrow Formula's Uniquinol QH Absorb

10) New trend to look out for this year:  Some supplement makers are now adding phytosomes to their supplements to improve absorption. Some people’s bodies are incapable of absorbing supplements without phytosomes. Without phytosomes, these supplements might not be able to work as intended. There are two kinds of molecules—polyphenols and triterpenes— that form part of the natural defense mechanism that exist in plants (to discourage insects and bacteria from eating them). They’re abundant in nature and impossible to avoid consuming in a normal diet. They block the absorption of many of the nutrients we eat or supplement with, decreasing their potency. Savvy supplement makers are combating the problem by adding phytosomes to their formulas. Click Here To Continue Reading

Stevia- The Smarter Choice

I have the occasional sweet tooth & these cravings are hard to fight off without feeling a bit guilty afterwards. Not only do I worry about fitting into my New Year’s dress, but I have to be concerned about my blood sugar level too?

I figure I am not the only one with this so-called “sweet tooth…” So, I looked into options for us. One of the best things we can do is replace the foods and beverages containing refined sugars or artificial sweeteners with ones containing a sweetener called Stevia.

The origins of Stevia came from South America. Stevia comes in the form of a plant that produces natural sweetener and the leaves are often used to make medicine. Stevia has been used as a natural sweetener for hundreds of years by the native people in South America. Stevia is a preferred alternative to refined sugars or artificial sweeteners because it is calorie-free and has low carbohydrates.

The leaves of the Stevia plant make an extract that is, without a doubt, the safest sweetener on the market. Aspartame and other artificial sweeteners are known to contain toxic elements. Stevia does not have any of these toxic elements and is consumed by millions of people daily. Stevia is a safe, natural substitute that’s ideal for those concerned with weight, or maintaining health by steering clear of sugar.

The future looks bright for those who substitute this friendly herb for sugar. Stevia is 300 times sweet as sugar with a glycemic index (aka GI) of “0.” For those of you that don’t know, this GI of “0” is a great thing!

The glycemic index (GI) is a ranking of carbohydrates on a scale from 0 to 100 according to the extent to which they raise blood sugar levels after eating. Low-GI foods, by virtue of their slow digestion and absorption, produce gradual rises in blood sugar and insulin levels, and have proven benefits for health. Low GI diets have been shown to improve both glucose and lipid levels in people with diabetes. They have benefits for weight control because they help control appetite and delay hunger.

Stevia can easily replace refined sugars or artificial sweeteners that you are currently using. Refined sugar does not provide your body with any nutritional benefits and, at best, represents empty calories in your diet. At worst, these refined sugars can get mixed up in a number of degenerative diseases. Stevia is much sweeter than sugar and doesn’t have any of sugar's unhealthy drawbacks.

As far as artificial sweeteners are concerned, I have a strong disbelief that anything artificial should be incorporated into the human diet. Once again, Stevia provides us with a safe, natural way to ingest something sweet without allowing our bodies to become a “toxic dump.”

The only complaint I have had about certain Stevia products, is that some have a slightly bitter aftertaste. Fortunately, there is competition in the marketplace. I have tested over a dozen Stevia products & have found a few favorites. They taste sweet, by far have the best flavor, and are cost-effective!

1)      Stevita Stevia Supreme- The purest Stevita Stevia (95% min. steviosides) is blended with Xylitol,a bulking agent with high digestive tolerance extracted from the bark of the birch tree. Box contains 50 individual packets Also available in flip-top 5.4 oz jar. Comparing with the Spoonable, this product has a more honey-like taste, because, for this product, we keep the same ratio of the steviol glycosides found in the leaves, thus as produced by nature. Can be used in hot or cold fluids, sprinkled onto cereals or fruit - or any other way you'd like to use this supplement! Click Here to Check Out Stevita Stevia Supreme

2)      Sweet Leaf SteviaPlus Powder- SteviaPlus is a completely natural, no-calorie, no-carbs (that's right. Zip. Zilch. Nada. No calories or carbs whatsoever) supplement that's sweeter than sugar (so you use a whole lot less). Just one packet is as sweet as two teaspoons of sugar. And because it's loaded with fiber, it's actually (gasp!) good for you, too! Not to mention it's safe for diabetics and Kosher certified. SteviaPlus uses only the best tasting, highest quality Stevia. And unlike those chemical sweeteners, SteviaPlus is great for cooking and baking. Stir SteviaPlus into your coffee or tea, sweeten up that bowl of cereal, use it in your cooking and baking, and ban the calories and chemicals found in sugar and artificial sweeteners. Your body is a temple, after all. Click Here to Check Out Sweet Leaf SteviaPlus Powder

3)      Sweet Leaf SteviaTabs- SteviaTabs are all-natural and free of carbs and calories. When dropped in your favorite hot liquid, SteviaTabs begin dissolving instantaneously, deliciously sweetening your coffee or tea. Safe for diabetics and with no carbs, calories, or chemicals, these tabs are already in their own convenient carrying case with 100 tabs per container. Dissolve 1-2 tablets in a hot or cold beverage. Click Here to Check Out Sweet Leaf SteviaTabs
